Washington tint law, in plain English

We only install shades that pass in Washington. Here's what the law allows.

  • Cars: every window except the windshield must let at least 24% of light through, film and glass combined.
  • Windshield: clear film that blocks UV is allowed on the full windshield (we use 70% VLT or lighter). Darker tint is only allowed on the top 6 inches.
  • SUVs, trucks and vans: windows behind the driver can be any darkness; front side windows still need 24%.
  • Reflectivity is capped at 35%, and a legal-tint label goes on the driver's window.
  • Medical exemptions are available with a physician's written statement.

Window tint FAQ

What's the darkest legal tint in Washington?

24% on a car's side and rear windows. On SUVs, trucks and vans, the windows behind the driver can go darker.

Can you tint my windshield?

Yes, with a clear SunTek film (70% VLT or lighter) that blocks UV and heat, which Washington allows on the full windshield. It's $200.

What film do you use?

SunTek ceramic film. Ceramic rejects more heat at the same shade than dyed film and won't interfere with phone or GPS signals.

When can I roll my windows down?

Wait a few days while the film cures; we'll tell you exactly how long at pickup. Light haze or small water pockets during curing are normal.

Do you remove old tint?

Yes. Removal is priced by how long it takes, so we quote it after seeing the car.

Can I get a medical exemption?

Washington allows exemptions with a physician's written statement. Bring it with you and we'll talk through the options.
